About Us

The Salopian Poetry Society is the premier poetry society in the County of Shropshire. Founded in 1976, it is one of the longest established poetry societies in the U.K.

Our members come from all different parts of the U.K., from Cornwall to Scotland, Ireland and abroad.

Membership currently stands at 150. New members are always welcome.

The society produces a glossy cover, quarterly magazine, averaging 50 pages of members’ poetry, chosen by a panel of four officers of the society.

Each magazine also contains a newsletter compiled by our Chairlady and Founder Member Violet Yapp, containing ‘snippets’ from members’ letters, commenting on poems from the previous magazine, plus news of other Societys' poetry competitions. The Winter edition of Salopeot also contains the six winning poems from the annual open poetry competition, which offers total prizes to the value of £500.

There is also an annual competition for members only, with smaller prizes, including a prize for the best humorous poem.
